Pocket knife from France Bretagne - London Horn Carbon
Maritime imprinted pocket knife: Brittany - London Horn Carbon
London owes its name to Britain, probably produced in Sheffield. From there, former prisoners of war took them to France. It spread in the 18th century on the Brittany coast. It is often called "Armor", derived from the old Celtic name of Brittany. The London was a faithful companion of the sailors and officers on the sailing ships of the time and was part of the basic equipment of the teams. Fishermen and oyster farmers quickly learned to appreciate its advantages, as did farmers and ranchers in the hinterland. The sturdy, swinging handle with its well-balanced shape lies firmly in the hand, and the broad, stable blade with pulled-down tip is perfect for various work at sea and on land.
The cuddly grip of this model is made of cow horn and is equipped with a blade made of carbon steel. Its advantages over today's stainless steel are higher edge retention and sharpness. Carbon steel is not protected against acidity or moisture and needs to be cared for regularly, preferably with food grade blade oil. Like all our pocket knives, the London is made in Thiers in the Auvergne, the traditional center of French cutting art.
